The 2023 season was a big one for the Spring-Ford Rams football team, particularly their passing game.
Led by head coach Chad Brubaker, the team registered an overall 9-3 record, second-place finish in the Pioneer Athletic Conference, and a trip to the PIAA District One Tournament.
The season kicked off in August with a nonconference matchup against the Governor Mifflin Mustangs. The game ended in a 49-19 win for the Rams and it set the tone for a highly competitive season.
After losing only one game in September, the Rams cruised into the PAC Championship versus Pope John Paul II High School. Unfortunately the Rams were not able to complete their journey, however, losing the game 28-27.
The Rams rebounded in the first round of the District One 6A Tourney, beating North Penn 42-35. The Rams fell to eventual District One champs Central Bucks South in the second round, 35-19.
The Rams were led by some very strong play this season.
Junior Matt Zollers, the team’s star quarterback, currently holds five Division 1 NCAA offers from schools like Penn State and University of Pittsburgh.
Zollers threw 37 touchdown passes for 2,917 yards vs. just two interceptions in his junior season. He holds the school record in TD passes at 66 as well as school records in single season passing yards.
This doesn’t overshadow the other star players that help make this football team the huge star it was. Mason Scott, a wide receiver, also holds six Division 1 offers.
Scott finished 2023 with 1,233 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. The senior now holds the record for most receiving yards in a single season.
Junior Jamal Lewis posted 1,085 all-purpose yards and a team-best 739 yards rushing.
Defensively, senior Mike Bendowski led the way with a team-high 44 tackles, Bryce Roberts with seven quarterback sacks, and Blake Turner with four interceptions.
