With a new administration comes lots of changes and President Donald Trump enlisted help from newly-turned Republican ally Elon Musk.
During the campaign President Trump promised that he would get rid of “waste, fraud and abuse” in Washington and is planning to do that through the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE as it has been nicknamed.
The controversies with DOGE come from every aspect of the organization, starting with whether DOGE is actually a government department, which Musk has repeatedly denied. However a court ruled that because of all of its power, DOGE is, in fact, a government department. And it seems like it, considering Musk has been present at most of Trump’s cabinet meetings.
Within the first 100 days of the second Trump administration, Musk and DOGE have, according to the office’s website, cut an estimated $160 billion, of which, many of the cuts have caused controversy. This has led to some frustration from Americans.
Because of DOGE, the government has cut funding for scientific research, climate change initiatives, and diversity, equity and inclusion programs. It has initiated and facilitated mass layoffs and dismantled government organizations.
One of the departments receiving a lot of focus from DOGE and the Trump administration is the Department of Education. DOGE has cut large scale research projects and fired many department employees. DOGE claims that the cuts to the department have saved over $881 million. Luckily for students applying for college, FAFSA and Pell Grants have not been affected by DOGE cuts.
After all of the controversies that have come with Musk and DOGE, many have taken to protesting and damaging Tesla’s cars and dealerships. This has led to Musk taking a step back from DOGE, and he will be leaving the position sometime in May. Technically, Musk is a government contractor and all government contractors are limited to 130-day stints in their position.
