Mia Matriccino and Evelyn Mejia ended their Spring-Ford tennis careers just as they started them – as state champions.
Matriccino and Mejia did not drop a set in the two-day, PIAA Tournament, compiling victories over teams from Holidaysburg, New Oxford, Conestoga, and Council Rock South en route to the championship Nov. 4. The Spring-Ford duo bested the team of Michelle Lerman and Anya Zubenko from CR South – the team they lost to just weeks earlier in the District One semifinals – in the championship match by a score of 7-6 (5), 6-3.
“It feels so awesome to finish as state champions,” Matriccino said about the victory. “Going through states is always a lot of fun, and the fact that we not only got there, but won it, is such a great feeling, especially since we hadn’t gotten there since freshman year.”
Matriccino and Mejia won another state championship during their ninth-grade season as the Rams took home the team championship in the PIAA Tournament.
