Since the COVID-19 pandemic, technology stands at the forefront for students in education.
This reality begs an important question: Is there too much dependence on technology rather than traditional books, pens, and paper?
Some feel it is a beneficial change to the educational landscape.
With the vast growth and advancement in technology, it is natural that schools start implementing more technology with students, who are the ones that use it in their everyday lives. Technology allows them to more comfortability take tests, read texts, write essays, and research topics.
“I’ve been accustomed to more work on the computers,” Spring-Ford sophomore Josue Villagomez Aguilera said. “I feel it’s easier to find answers rather than getting a book out and flipping through all the pages.”
When it comes to organizing, the sophomore added technology makes it “much easier to manage my projects, assignments, and homework.”
That’s not to say concerns don’t exist.
The use of AI chats and other forms of cheating have risen, and some see them as symbolic of an increasing over-dependence on computers.
This year, in particular, the prominent SAT and ACT tests transition from paper to computer formats. The tests’ designed sections of math and reading – along with timed breaks – should provide students with a controlled test-taking environment.
The influence of chromebooks is evident with communication as there is the ability to send emails between teachers and students for the purposes of clearing up questions, announcing tests dates, or providing other information.
Students can also prepare themselves for the school week by looking on the Canvas module to see what’s going on in class.
Having all assignments on the same device diminishes the forgetfulness of assignments with visible due dates and losing a paper before it needs to be turned in. It also reduces the amount of materials needed for students to squeeze into their backpacks and try to hoist on their back everyday.
“I wouldn’t even notice if teachers stopped handing out paper assignments or tests, nor would I be really bothered by it,” said Villagomez Aguilera.
Technology implemented in assignments better prepares students to have diverse technological skills they will use in their careers or fields of work. As the world around is rapidly changing there should be no surprise to the education adapting to the society around.
