As the primary season closes, it becomes apparent that the 2024 presidential election will be a sequel to the 2020 election. While its contenders are repetitive, this season has remained an interesting one with President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump both facing their own set of obstacles, with Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. posing as a threat to both candidates.
Former President Trump has been facing more legal challenges throughout this election cycle. Most recently, Trump is the defendant in a trial regarding falsifying business records during his bid for president in 2016. He is also facing several other legal challenges but the trials have been indefinitely postponed. Despite this, Trump is still leading in the polls, with Real Clear Politics (RCP) reporting that Trump is currently polling at 46.1%, which is only 1.2 points ahead of President Biden, but RCP has had the former president polling around this point since last October.
President Biden also has his fair share of challenges going into November. His approval rating currently sits at 39.5%, showing Americans’ dissatisfaction with what his administration has accomplished. A recent issue that the Biden campaign is facing is the potential TikTok ban that was signed into law at the beginning of May. Just days after the bill that would ban the social media app was signed, the Biden campaign was under fire for posting videos on the app as a part of their campaign strategy. Many Democratic strategists also fear that the potential TikTok ban will cost Biden the support of younger voters, who have been the Democrats’ stronghold for years.
Kennedy is also an interesting threat to both major parties this election cycle. The member of the notorious political family is not likely to win the general election, but is still currently polling around 8%, which may not seem like much, but in an election as close as this, every vote matters.
