The upcoming 2024 election has got many Americans scrambling to avoid the dreaded rematch of former President Trump vs. President Biden. Disapproval of President Biden’s involvement in the Israel-Palestine War has turned many away from him, while countless charges against former President Trump have made many members of the Republican party hesitant to support him.
Other candidates like Mike Pence and Tim Scott had suspended their campaign in late 2023. However, Vivek Ramaswamy, Ron DeSantis, and Chris Christie dropped out earlier this year in January.
It was only Nikki Haley and former President Trump remaining in the race until Nikki Haley made the decision to drop out on March 6. This was after Haley lost every state except Vermont in the Super Tuesday elections.
Haley had focused her campaign on aid to Ukraine and Israel, and returning the economy to a pre-COVID state. She had also framed her campaign around Republicans who did not want Donald Trump in office.
“I said earlier this week that no matter what happens in South Carolina, I would continue to run for president. I’m a woman of my word,” Haley said. “In the next 10 days, another 21 states and territories will speak. They have the right to a real choice, not a Soviet-style election with only one candidate. And I have a duty to give them that choice.” However, it seems that after losing nearly every single state on Super Tuesday, the American people have spoken.
Yet even after dropping out of the campaign, she still holds supporters coined “zombie voters”, who are voting for her even though she’s out of the running, a prime example being in April where she received 16% of the Pennsylvania vote. Reporters from ABC News talked to some of her supporters, and while some have decided to back Biden, others are unsure of where to go; they don’t want to vote for either remaining candidate. Nearly a quarter of Americans have no idea who to vote for this year, and are trying to pick the “lesser of two evils”, making them increasingly disillusioned with this election.
In Nikki Haley’s speech addressing the end of her campaign, she congratulated the nominee Donald Trump, although she has yet to endorse him. Haley based her entire bid for president on being another option for those who did not want Trump, an idea that many of her supporters are holding onto, refusing to vote for him as a result.
