Summer Movie Preview

In the post-pandemic world, the movie industry is still pushing to make its recovery and get people back into movie theaters to see the newest and best films. This summer has an array of upcoming movies that will hopefully fill up the seats in all of the local theaters again. Join us in breaking down some of what we can expect to see this summer:

MAY

“Downton Abbey: A New Era”

The brand new Downton Abbey film, rated 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, is projected to arrive in theaters on Friday, May 20. In this picture, the viewers follow The Crawley’s on their travels to South France. The film directed by Simon Curtis stars actors/actresses: Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, and Raquel Cassidy.

“Men”

Alex Garland’s newest arriving thriller “Men” follows a traumatized woman in search of healing in the countryside, only for her to run head first into a new, evil threat, disrupting her plans for peace. The film, rated 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, is starring actors/actresses: Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear, Paapa Essiedu, and Gayle Rakin, and is set to premiere on Friday, May 20.

“Top Gun: Maverick”

Tom Cruise makes his appearance yet again as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in Joseph Kosinski’s film set to arrive in theaters on Friday, May 27. This highly anticipated feature is rated 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and is a follow-up to the 1986 Tony Scott film detailing the strenuous training schools for ace naval fighter pilots. The film also stars actors/actresses: Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, and Jon Hamm.

JUNE

“Jurassic World Dominion”

The classic Colin Trevorrow film is one of the most highly anticipated films of the summer, expected to arrive Friday, June 10. The original actors/actresses: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum take on Jurassic World yet again, dodging the dangers of living in a dinosaur infested society.

“Lightyear”

The Pixar prequel film directed by Angus Maclane details the journey and adventures of beloved “Toy Story” character Buzz Lightyear. The picture stars actors/actresses: Chris Evans, Taika Waititi, Keke Palmer, and James Brolin. The motion picture is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Friday, June 17.

“Elvis”

Tom Hanks and Austin Butler collide worlds and bring viewers the story of Elvis Presley and his obstacle-filled relationship with his personal manager, Tom Parker. The Baz Luhrmann film also stars actors/actresses: Helen Thomson and Richard Roxburgh. Look out for the awaited flick on its release date, Friday, June 24.

JULY

“Minions: the Rise of Gru”

The second of the films focusing solely on Gru’s little, yellow henchmen, also known as minions, details them working for Gru in his early days, helping him become a part of a known super villain group. The Kyle Balda film stars actors/actresses: Steve Carell, Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, and RZA, and is expected in theaters on Friday, July 1st.

“Thor: Love and Thunder”

The Taika Waititi film details the return of Gorr the God Butcher, interrupting Thor’s plans to retire in peace, but with the new threats he is forced to make other plans. The film is expected to come to viewers on Friday, July 8th, and is starring actors/actresses: Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, and Russell Crowe.

“Where the Crawdads Sing”

The Olivia Newman film based off of the synonymous bestselling novel follows the story of Kya, a North Carolina native who becomes a prime suspect in a murder case. The drama stars actors/actresses: Daisy-Edgar Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, and Garret Dillahunt, and is scheduled to premiere in theaters on Friday, July 15.

“Nope”

Jordan Peele’s newest horror film details the plot of a horse ranch in California, where supernatural elements torment the human and animal populations. The picture arriving on Friday, July 22 stars actors/actresses: Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, and Barbie Ferreira.

August

“Bullet Train”

The David Leitch comedy/action film details the story, based on a Japanese novel, of a certain assassin on his last mission that proves itself to be far more difficult than expected. The picture stars actors/actresses: Brad Pitt, Joey King, Aaron taylor-Johnson, and Brian Tyree Henry is coming to us in theaters on Friday, August 5th.

“The Man from Toronto”

Patrick Hughes’ crime-based comedy focuses on an assassin and a screw up who are mistaken for each other, and must work together to stay alive. Starring are actors/actresses; Kevin Hart, Woody Harrelson, Kaley Cuoco, and Jasmine Matthews. The film is set to arrive on the big screen on Friday, August 12.

“Beast”

This thriller directed by Baltasar Kormakur focuses on a father and two young daughters who visit a game reserve in South Africa. The two daughters become prey and are stalked by a dangerous lion. Starring in the film set to release Friday, August 19th are actors/actresses: Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley, Iyana Halley, and Leah Sava Jeffries.

“Samaritan”

The newest superhero film directed by Julius Avery focuses on a young boy who makes a discovery that a famous superhero who was thought to be dead, is actually still alive. The film follows the boy as he tries to find him. The film stars actors/actresses: Sylvester Stallone, Moises Arias, Martin Starr, and Natacha Karam, and is coming to your local cinema on Friday, August 26.

“Three Thousand Years of Longing”

George Miller’s romantic fantasy follows a woman who comes across a djinn who offers the woman 3 wishes in exchange for freedom, a classic “genie in a bottle” theme. The film, set to arrive on Friday, August 31, stars actors/actresses: Idris Elba, Tilda Swinton, Aamito Lagum, and Nicolas Mouawad.
