Spring-Ford’s senior wrestlers celebrate with the program’s first-ever third-place trophy at the PIAA Class AAA Team Championships on Saturday.

Staff Report

As it turned out, Spring-Ford’s wrestling team had one more record-breaking moment in them during the most historic season in program history.

The Rams (14-1) rebounded from an early loss at the PIAA Class AAA Semifinals in a big way, besting District Four’s Williamsport 36-32 in the third-place match to claim the program’s best-ever bronze-medal finish at the state tournament.

Vinnie Ortlip (113), Dominic Ortlip (120), Quinn Smith (126), Zach Needles (152), Jack McGill (160), Aaron Judge (189), and Joey Milano (215) each earned victories to help propel the Rams past Williamsport.

The Rams had narrowly lost their chance at a trip to the championship match in a 32-28 loss to District Three’s Central Dauphin in the semifinals. Cole Smith (106), Dominic Ortlip (113), Vinnie Ortlip (120), Quinn Smith (132), McGill (160), Xavier Cushman (172), and Milano (215) earned victories in the match.

District Seven’s Waynesburg Central defeated Central Dauphin, 42-3, in the championship match.

The Rams ended their team season as Pioneer Athletic Conference champions, as Class AAA Southeast Region champions, and as the third-best team in the state. Individually, the Rams also earned the program’s first-ever gold medalist at the state tournament in Milano and a silver medalist in McGill.
