Abington’s girls basketball team came in confident and eager to take on top-seeded Spring-Ford this past Saturday in the District One Class 6A Quarterfinals. Both teams possessed some high-powered scorers and strong defense, but the Rams prevailed in an energetic affair, 58-41.

After an early technical was assigned to Galloping Ghosts’ head coach, it provided a much needed spark for the Rams as they jumped out to a commanding 11-point lead over Abington after the first quarter behind 3-pointers from Abbey Boyer and Mac Pettinelli. Lucy Olsen added seven, and it really seemed as if the Rams were going to take control and dominate, like we have seen numerous times this season.

However, the Ghosts were able to close the gap in the second quarter behind 3-point shooting and tough baskets by Jaida Helm. Behind this and some stingy defense, Abington found themselves down by only three points headed into halftime.

Coming out of the half, Abington seemed poised to continue their momentum and take the lead. But senior Abbey Boyer took the game into her own hands, taking two defensive charges and making her signature corner three pointer to ignite a rally. Spring-Ford finished the quarter on a 13-0 run, and found themselves leading 46-32 headed into the final quarter.

After that lead, the Rams never looked back as they slowed the game down and drained the remainder of the game out to seal it from the free throw line.

The Rams were led by Lucy Olsen who tallied 21 points, Boyer with 15, and Anna Azzara with 9. Helm led the Galloping Ghosts with 9 points.

After the win over Abington, the Rams will now host third-seeded Upper Dublin this Wednesday. Upper Dublin is coming off of a strong performance that resulted in a 49-37 win over WC Rustin.

Spring-Ford and Upper Dublin faced each other earlier this season in an overtime thriller, and it was the Rams who emerged victorious, winning 49-46 behind Olsen’s 22 points.

The district semifinals has been the toughest hurdle for the Rams these past few years, as they’ve made it this far in the playoffs in each of the last 3 seasons and have not been able to come out on top.

It’s going to be hard to beat a good team twice, especially in the playoffs, but if the Rams are able to continue to shoot the ball at a high percentage and play strong defense, they should give themselves a good shot of advancing this Wednesday night and breaking that streak.
