Experiencing a successful season is not new to the Spring-Ford girls basketball team. But this year has a different feel to it for a multitude of reasons.
As COVID-19 continued to affect high school sports seasons across the state, the season was delayed and resulted in games being limited to inside the Pioneer Athletic Conference for almost the entirety of the 2020-21 season.
The Rams certainly made up for lost time with the program’s best-ever start at 19 wins versus no losses.
Now, they are looking to make the postseason perfect as well.
The Rams start the Class 6A District One Playoffs against 16th-seeded Penn Wood tonight, March 10, at 7 p.m.. The Patriots finished their season with a record of 6-4, and they are coming off of a 63-60 win over Perkiomen Valley, led by top scorers Lashanda Smith and Ashley Cyrus.
The Rams finished their season with a record of 19-0, taking home the PAC title for the fourth time in four years. The Rams also clinched the No. 1 seed in the district playoffs, which gives them home court advantage throughout the tournament. The Rams’ played only two close games in their PAC schedule, beating Perkiomen Valley 42-34, without Lucy Olsen. In one of their only offensive hardships of the season and only defeating Pope John Paul || 34-30.
Late in the season, the Rams scheduled four tough tests against non-PAC opponents, including games against Upper Dublin, the fourth seed in the district, West Chester Rustin, Cumberland Valley, and Central Dauphin. The Rams trailed late in both the Cumberland Valley and Upper Dublin games, but clutch efforts from Lucy Olsen guided them to victories.
In this season as a whole the Rams got great contributions from star players like Olsen, who averaged 16.9 points per game, Emily Tiffan, with 12.9 points per game, and Anna Azzara, who had 9.2 points per game, to help them steamroll competition. Stingy defense by senior Abbey Boyer has also been a huge component in the Rams’ undefeated start, and it will have to continue in order for the Rams’ to have further success in the postseason.
One main storyline from the Rams’ perfect start to the season was Olsen taking over as the school’s all-time leading scorer, passing girls leader Sammy Stipa, and boys leader Mike Brock who had 1,392 points.
With a victory against the Patriots tonight, the Rams would face the winner of Abington and Methacton in the next round. Spring-Ford will look to continue their regular season success to hopefully make a deep run in this year’s postseason.
