Staff Report

Four Spring-Ford wrestlers captured individual championships and the Rams added the team crown as well at the District One Class AAA South Tournament on Saturday at Sun Valley High School.

Cole Smith (106 pounds), Dominic Ortlip (113), Jack McGill (160), and Joey Milano (189) wrestled their way to weight-class championships. Senior Zach Needles (152) added a second-place medal to help the Rams earn the team championship. All five wrestlers advanced to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA Regional tournament, where the top four finishers next weekend will earn a spot at the ensuing super regional.

Seniors McGill and Milano earned championships at regionals last year at 152 and 160, respectively. McGill (seventh-place medal) and Milano (fourth-place) followed their championships with state medals at Hershey’s Giant Center. Ortlip, a junior, also earned a spot at states a year ago by virtue of a fourth-place finish at 103.

Regionals will take place this weekend at Council Rock North and Council Rock South High School. The Districts 1, 2, 11 and 12 Super Regional will take part next weekend at Quakertown High School, where the top-four finishers will advance to the one-day, eight-wrestler-per-weight-class PIAA Tournament in Hershey the weekend after.
