Sixers’ changes bring hope

By Anthony Goldsmith, Staff Writer

After a massively disappointing season ended in a playoff sweep to the Boston Celtics this summer, the Sixers were forced to make many decisions regarding the current state of the team.

They had a coach that could not lead a playoff team,  a bad front office, a terrible contract in Al Horford, and no promising shooters to surround young superstars Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid.

General Manager Elton Brand was left with the challenge of fixing these issues, and the Sixers decided to act aggressively to address the problem — hiring two of the most respected people in the NBA in former Clippers coach Doc Rivers and former Rockets team president Daryl Morey.

The 76ers made the decision to fire coach Brett Brown after a disappointing season, and terrible postseason decision making. The Sixers hired Rivers to take over before also considering Tyronn Lue and Mike D’Antoni.

Rivers has an impressive resume with a coaching record of 943-681, has won a championship, and boasts vast playoff experience as a coach. The team will hope he makes much better decisions to get this team to the next step.

The Sixers brought in Daryl Morey to start making the decisions as team president. Morey is known for his strong and fearless decision making, along with his ability to construct great and consistent teams.

One of the first moves Morey made was to trade away Josh Richardson and Horford. The 76ers traded away Horford, Theo Maledon, Vasilije Micic, and a 2025 first-rounder for the Oklahoma Thunder’s Danny Green, Terrance Ferguson, and Vincent Poirier. This trade was deemed great by many as the 76ers got a new starter as well as being able to dump Horford’s contract. Richardson and a second-round pick gave the Sixers elite shooter Seth Curry. This trade provided the great perimeter shooter the Sixers lacked during last year’s dismal season.

In the NBA draft, the Sixers selected Kentucky star guard Tyrese Maxey with the 21st overall pick. Maxey played only one year at Kentucky and could be a candidate for rookie of the year if his early stellar play continues. The team also picked three-point shooter Isiah Joe in the second round, who played well when pressed into game action earlier this season.

In another offseason move, the 76ers signed veteran big-man Dwight Howard to bring more depth to the bench. This move strengthened the 76ers bench, giving them a strong frontcourt rotation. The Sixers head into the season with a rotation that contains Shake Milton as the 6th man. The rest of the rotation will be as follows, Howard, Furkan Korkmaz, Matisse Thybulle, Maxey, and Mike Scott. This is a very deep rotation, and will hopefully allow the 76ers to find the elusive playoff wins they have been looking for.

In conclusion, the 76ers made many moves to try and completely change the disappointing team from last season. They look to still be a formidable defensive team but with much more scoring potential thanks to many more shooters on the floor to complement their stars of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. The 76ers look like a force to be reckoned with this season, and it will be fun to watch.
