GIRLS SOCCER: Rams hit goals in solid season

The Spring-Ford girls’ soccer team had a tremendous season, achieving success in both the regular season and postseason District One Tournament.

For those who followed the team early, the fantastic finish to the season did not surprise as the team had a star-studded lineup consisting of several Division 1 commits in both the senior and junior classes.

Despite their talent the Rams still had to perform on the field, and that they did.

Winning 10 out of 12 regular season Pioneer Athletic Conference games, Spring-Ford put forth a consistent effort in their conference schedule. The Rams were able to take both games against rival Perkiomen Valley, shutting out the Vikings 1-0 first and then showing greater dominance in their 4-0 triumph later in the season. The team also upended reigning state-champion Boyertown twice, including a 6-0 dominant victory. The Rams fiercely battled against Owen J. Roberts on all three accounts, splitting the series in the regular season and walking away with a gritty 3-2 win in the latter of the two matchups during the postseason.

Along with the one loss to the Wildcats, the 1-1 tie against Methacton was the only flaw to the Rams’ nearly perfect season in their conference. This impressive effort earned the team the 2020 PAC co-championship with OJR, who the Rams showed they had the edge over when they faced each other in the district tournament.

But first, the team drew 12th-ranked Central Bucks West as the  No. 5 seed after finishing 10-1-1 in the PAC. The Rams came up victorious over CB West in the district opener, 1-0, thanks to Liv Curry’s winner at McNelly stadium.

The Rams won the district quarterfinal against PAC rival OJR in a thrilling 1-0 game. Allison McVey’s goal ended the contest towards the dying embers of the double-overtime standoff. The Rams followed by knocking out top-seeded Downingtown East, 1-0, in the district semifinal thanks to Reece Kershner’s goal off of Molly Thomas’s service from a corner.

The historic run ended in a competitive 2-0 loss to eventual state champion Pennridge.

After such a successful season, four members of the team received PAC conference honors. Seniors Thomas and Hope Flannegin, alongside juniors McVey and Curry received All-Conference First-Team awards. Juniors Kershner and Madeline O’Donnell and Senior Riley Wallace received recognition as All-Conference Second Team.

The Rams had an iconic season in the history of the program and definitely fulfilled the high expectations of the deeply talented roster. The team contains so much promising and young talent, there is no limit to what this team can achieve in years to come.
