The boys basketball team held off Wissahickon for a first-round victory.

Spring-Ford found itself trailing 16-9 at the hands of a scrappy Wissahickon team with about five minutes remaining in the first quarter of the first round of the District One Class 6A Tournament.

Coming off a Pioneer Athletic Conference semifinal loss, the Rams could have very easily packed it in and called it a season. That thought never seemed to cross their minds, though, as they weathered an incredibly hot start from Trojans junior Guard Matt Compas and defeated Wissahickon, 58-56, to advance.

Spring-Ford battled the entire first quarter before finding their game in the second. Standing at 6’4”, Tre Medearis proved to be too much for Wissahickon in the middle. Scoring 13 points in the first half, Medearis seemed to be the go-to guy. Junior guard Zack Skrocki added 15 points, as his ability to knock down mid-range shots proved to be a huge factor for the Rams, including a buzzer- beater to close the first half and give the Rams a 33-30 advantage.

The Rams dominated the third quarter, but they seemed to take their foot off the gas in the fourth.

Winning by eight with just under a minute to go, the game finally seemed to calm down and the Rams’ seemed to be coasting to the finish. But consecutive missed free throws and consecutive threes by Harrison Williams got the Trojans’ within two with about ten seconds remaining.

The Rams’ missed another free throw, giving Wissahickon a chance to win the game at the buzzer. Their shot attempt did not even hit the rim, though, and the entire Ram Nation gymnasium exhaled a collective sigh.

Spring-Ford will now travel to Bensalem to face off with the seventh seed of District One. With a win, Spring-Ford would find themselves making their first ever consecutive state tournament appearance.

If the Rams’ continue to get strong play from Medearis and Skrocki, an upset does not seem too far-fetched.
